Renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, known for his trailblazing work in Indian cinema, has announced his next project, Syndicate. The director recently took to social media to share details about the film, which he describes as his most ambitious project to date.
Varma, who earlier penned a heartfelt confession about his regrets in not using his iconic film Satya as a benchmark for his subsequent works, expressed his determination to deliver a film that honors the passion that originally drew him to filmmaking. He promised Syndicate would serve as a cinematic redemption, washing away what he referred to as his “cinema sins” of the past few years.
Unveiling the concept, Varma described Syndicate as a gripping narrative centered on a shadowy and terrifying organization threatening the very fabric of India. The director delved into the evolution of criminal enterprises, charting their transformation over decades. He detailed how street gangs of the 1970s were replaced by smugglers, who were then overshadowed by corporate crime syndicates like D Company. Similarly, global terror groups evolved from Black September to Al Qaeda and eventually ISIS, each deadlier than the last.
Varma explained that the rise of intense polarization in India has created fertile ground for a new kind of criminal organization—one that transcends traditional boundaries. This “syndicate” is described as an alliance of powerful entities, including political forces, policing agencies, ultra-wealthy business magnates, and even the military.
“This isn’t a story set in the far future,” Varma stated. “It’s about events that could unfold tomorrow or even next week. For example, the world woke up to Al Qaeda on September 11, 2001, but didn’t know it existed on September 10.”
Syndicate is designed to be a chilling and realistic portrayal of crime and terror, with Varma emphasizing that the film’s horror stems not from supernatural elements but from the dark realities of human behavior.
“It will expose the unimaginable horrors that humans are capable of orchestrating,” Varma explained. “The story explores the cyclical nature of crime and terror, showing that while we may celebrate victories, the darker truth is that these forces never truly die—they return in more dangerous forms.”
Varma revealed that the film will begin with the chilling statement: ‘Only man can be the most terrifying animal.’ He assured that Syndicate would be a deeply layered and intricately calculated thriller, designed to keep audiences on edge.
The director also confirmed that the cast and other production details will be announced soon, further fueling anticipation for the project.
