The Maharashtra government has announced a refund of ₹9 crore to Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. The refund pertains to an excess amount paid by the actor during the conversion of the lease on his iconic sea-facing bungalow, ‘Mannat,’ into full ownership rights.
According to suburban collector Satish Bagal, the issue dates back to 2019 when Shah Rukh Khan and his wife, Gauri Khan, initiated the process of converting the lease of their heritage property in Bandra to ‘Class 1 complete ownership.’ At the time, the couple paid a premium to the government for the conversion.
However, a tabulation error in the calculation of the premium was later discovered. Upon identifying the discrepancy, Shah Rukh Khan filed an application with the revenue authorities, seeking a refund for the excess payment. The application was reviewed, and the refund was approved earlier this week.
While reports suggest the actor had initially paid upwards of ₹25 crore as premium for the conversion, officials have refrained from confirming the exact figure.
The sea-facing bungalow, ‘Mannat,’ holds significant heritage value and is one of Mumbai’s most recognizable landmarks. It serves not only as Shah Rukh Khan’s residence but also as a symbol of his success and connection with his fans.
